Let me help you make delicious, healthy sourdough bread with a four simple ingredient recipe.
Five simple ingredients for delicious, healthy bread.
Why should I make my own bread?
Bread has been deemed the “bad guy” when it comes to health foods. But in all reality, if it is made correctly, it can actually be beneficial to your health.
When bread is made from sourdough and at home, it is easier on your digestive system and leaves out all of the preservatives that our bodies just don’t know what to do with. Sourdough also has beneficial bacteria that helps balance the gut microbiome.
Plus, there’s nothing like smelling fresh bread baking in the oven.
The only drawback is you may find yourself wanting more because it is so delicious.
What if I don’t have a sourdough starter?
If you don’t have a sourdough starter, I have a quick 2 day recipe to get you going. This recipe also tells you how to feed your starter so you can keep it going and make many, many things with sourdough! Click here if you need to make your own sourdough starter before making this bread.
Let’s get to the sourdough bread.
Sourdough bread is light and fluffy with a bit of a sweet, tangy taste. I really think that what you feed your starter has a big effect on how your bread tastes.
I typically feed my starter a mixture of mashed potatoes, flour, sugar and water. I’ve tried just flour and water before but I didn’t care for the taste as much. What I feed my starter is also in this blog.
Once you have your starter the way you like it, making bread is as simple as adding starter, flour, water and salt together. This bread recipe is super simple but I will warn you that it takes prep time. This isn’t something you can whip up 30 minutes before company shows up. More on the steps to making the bread below.
5 simple Ingredients for sourdough bread
Steps to making sourdough bread
Step 1 – dry goods
I recommend starting the night before you want the bread. Gather all your ingredients. Mix flour and sea salt together.
Step 2 – mix all ingredients
Mix water and sourdough starter in with the flour and sea salt with a wooden spoon or spatula.
Step 3 – knead
Once you have gotten most of the ingredients mixed with a spoon, begin kneading the dough on a floured surface. Take the dough and fold each corner in and press with your hands. Repeat this step until your dough is a nice round ball that is slightly sticky. Let it sit for 10 minutes then repeat this step 2 more times.
Step 4 – cover and allow to rise
After your dough ball has been kneaded 3x, place it back in your bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Allow it to rise for 6-8 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Step 5 – knead again and split if making multiple loaves
Once your dough has risen, take it out of the bowl and knead it again on a floured surface. Knead it until the dough is in a tight ball and is starting to tear a bit from the folding. If you are going to bake it in a dutch oven, leave the dough in one ball. If you are going to use bread pans, divide your dough into two balls and knead them the same way. Allow your dough ball(s) to rise in a greased dish for 6-8 hours or until doubled again.
Step 6 – score and bake your sourdough bread
Take a sharp knife and slice 1 inch lines in your bread about 2-3 inches apart. This is called scoring and will help your bread to bake evenly. You can get pretty creative with your bread scoring if you’d like. I’ve seen some beautiful loaves of bread but it doesn’t effect the taste.
Bake your bread at 400ยบ for 20-23 minutes until the top is a golden brown. Remove the bread after cooking and allow to cool in the pan before slicing.
Ways to serve your Sourdough Bread
This bread is so yummy that it doesn’t need any additional foods to make it good but you can certainly enjoy it with many other things.
We love to serve it with supper and put a slice of butter on it to melt. This reminds me of the rolls from Texas Roadhouse but without the guilt.
You can also use it as sandwich bread or even French toast. The uses are limitless when it comes to this bread.
