Natural Remedies for Sick Kids

Below you will find some natural remedies to help sick kids that we use with our family.

Why should I use natural remedies to help my sick kids?

Each person has their own convictions and opinions on what helps and doesn’t help when it comes to their kid(s). I am not a doctor so none of this is medical advice. I am a mother who has done a lot of research and I want to keep our lives as natural as possible.

Most modern day medicines have some pretty rough side effects that can be bad for the future health of us or our children. Our family chooses to treat naturally first in most cases and if needed we will use modern medicine.

How do I treat a cough, runny nose and sore throat naturally?

Honey

Our family uses honey for our kids age 1 and older for a sore throat and to help with allergies. Honey works best if it is local to you and raw. We typically give our kids 1 tsp before going to bed to help soothe a sore throat and to keep them from coughing. If the child is 6 months to 1 year, we use maple syrup to soothe a cough.

Colloidal Silver

We keep colloidal silver on hand for any time we or our kids get sick. It has no flavor so it is easy to consume as an adult or child. When our child is sick, they get 3 teaspoons a day. We will also use a mist to squirt up their nose if they seem to have a lot of congestion going on.

Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic, anti-viral and helps to boost the immune system. It is still considered a metal so we only use 10 ppm and only when our child is sick.

Homeopathic remedies

We love using homeopathic remedies, especially on our kids. Kids seem to respond to them very well and quickly. The two brands we use most are Boiron and Hyland’s. I just search for homeopathic and their symptoms.

Elevated bed & Humidifier

Before our sick child goes to bed, we make sure to elevate their bed by rolling up a few towels or blankets and placing it under the top of their mattress. This process helps to allow their sinuses to drain in the right direction instead of their throat which causes more coughing.

A humidifier helps to break up the mucus as well as keeping the air moist to make breathing easier. We use one like this to help our children get better rest at night.

How do I treat a fever naturally?

I have learned that a fever is a great sign that your body is able to fight. In our home, we aren’t very concerned when our child gets a fever as long as it is 104ยบ or lower. A fever is a sign that your immune system is responding to an invasion and it is doing its job to get rid of the invader(s).

A few ways we help our kids when they have a fever are:

Ice socks

We place damp socks into a freezer for 5 minutes then put them on our child’s feet. We then cover them with a thick pair of dry socks and allow their body to “dry” the socks with the heat. This usually helps to bring their temperature down.

Detox baths

Detox baths are great at assisting the body in removing whatever has made us sick. We run a lukewarm bath with 1 gallon of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of Epsom salts with immune boosting essential oils. This is usually a big hit with our kids and helps them to recover a lot faster.

Other ways we help support our child with a fever is skin-to-skin, homeopathic medicines, chiropractic care and making sure they are drinking lots of fluids.

Chiropractic care has helped bring my children’s as well as my own fever down within an hour. We love visiting our local chiropractor when we are sick.

How do I treat an ear ache naturally?

Ear aches are pretty common in children due to their undeveloped ear canal. When our child complains of ear aches we use 2-3 drops of warm olive oil, diluted garlic oil, chiropractic care and a heat pack.

We have been able to avoid antibiotics with our kids by using these natural medicines.

Where do I start with natural remedies for my sick kids?

A great place to start with your kids is a healthy diet. Allow them to eat Whole Foods that are not processed. Cook from scratch whenever you can and know what is in your food. Starting healthy habits young will help them as they grow into adults and hopefully will have you dealing with less sickness throughout their life.

Keep a few staples on hand at all times. Some of my favorites to keep in our natural medicine cabinet are:

  • Colloidal Silver
  • Epsom Salts
  • Vinegar
  • Essential oils
  • Local Raw Honey
  • Homeopathic Medicines
  • Elderberry Syrup

I also got some of my advice from a Naturopathic Pediatrician that I got to interview here!
