DIY Macrame Plant Hanger

This DIY macrame plant hanger is super trendy and a great way to display your plants.

I’m really into the bohemian style in my home. I love all of the natural tones and of course all of the plants. It really allows me to decorate my home with useful items instead of lots of clutter.

One way I like to display my plants is by hanging them. I’ve made a few macrame art pieces so I have some extra cord and wanted to make my own macrame plant hanger.

What materials do I need to make a macrame plant hanger?

For most macrame plant hangers you will only need macrame cord. I decided to use a plastic ring on the bottom of mine to sit my plant inside.

How much cord do I need for a macrame plant hanger?

For this plant hanger you will need 36 feet of macrame cord. You will cut your cords into lengths of 6 feet.

Learn your macrame knots

I learned these knots in school when we were really into making friendship bracelets. I had no idea they were macrame knots. Here is a short video by Emily Faith that demonstrates the 3 main knots we will use in this macrame plant hanger.

The end is done with a gathering knot.

Here are the steps to a DIY macrame plant hanger:

1. Cut 6 – 6 foot long pieces of macrame cord
2. Fold each cord in half.
3. Using a lark’s head knot, attach each string to your ring.
4. Separate the knots into groups of two. This should give you three groups.
5. Take one group of cord and measure 4 inches down.
6. Tape the middle two cords down with painter’s tape at the 4 inch mark.
7. Using the outer cords, create 4 square knots. Repeat on the other two sections.
8. Lay your ring on a table and separate your square knots evenly. This was about 11.5 inches apart for me.
9. Tape down each section and divide the cords. Have them meet in the middle of each section and tape them down.
10. Create 4 square knots with each new section.
11. Pull all of the cords together and make sure the ring is centered. Fold all of the cords over to make a loop at the top.
12. Create a wrapping knot around the cords and secure. Cut off excess cords.
13. Place your potted plant in the center of the ring and display your DIY macrame plant hanger so you can enjoy it.
