There’s just something about a warm bowl of potato soup that causes a cold, dreary day to become cozy and memorable. I remember growing up my dad would make a potato soup each winter. It was never the exact same recipe. His soup was always a little different than the last bowl. Now today I’m exactly the same way. I don’t ever make the same bowl of potato soup but today I’m sharing a Potato Soup Recipe with exact measurements so you can make it yourself. But don’t worry if you don’t have all of the ingredients. You can make your own version of this potato soup and make your own memories with your family.
The Potato Soup Staples
There are a few ingredients you will need every time to make a good potato soup.
- Potatoes (of course)
- Milk
- Broth
- Salt & spices
With these few ingredients you can make your potato soup base and add more things as you wish.
How to make Potato Soup from scratch
- Dice half a large yellow onion, 2 cloves of garlic and cut up 3-4 slices of bacon into small pieces and sauteĀ“it in your soup pot with butter. Once it is browned, add in 1/4 cup flour.
- In the same pot, pour in 2 cups broth and 2 cups milk. I like to use chicken bone broth that I make at home. You can use chicken or beef broth. It will vary the taste a little bit.
- Dice 20 small potatoes or use about 5 cups worth of diced potatoes. I cut mine into about 1/2 inch cubes.
- Put the potatoes into the pot and add in basil, sage, crushed red pepper flakes and sea salt. Simmer with a lid on until potatoes are soft enough to push a fork into them.

If you are looking to add in some extra protein, you can add in some already cooked ground beef, turkey or chicken before the potatoes. This will allow the meat to soak up the flavors of the soup and not overcook the potatoes.
